NEW TO BOXING? START WITHOUT SPARRING
Chessboxing alternates timed chess with boxing. Beginners can learn the format through chess, footwork, shadowboxing, pads and bags without being asked to spar.
If you are new to boxing, start in Adult Recreational boxing while joining the non-contact foundation work. You can add sparring later if you want to and a coach agrees that you are ready.
The boundary begins when another person is punching back. Before controlled contact, a coach checks your defence, composure and power control, then finds a suitable partner. H&G's normal registration and medical requirements also apply before sparring.
Those checks apply only to sparring. They do not stop a beginner joining the chess, transition drills or non-contact boxing work.
How the class works
SEVEN ALTERNATING ROUNDS
H&G plans to use four chess rounds and three boxing rounds. The sequence is shown below. Other chessboxing clubs and events may use different rules.
If you are ready to spar, the boxing rounds use controlled technical sparring. Beginners use shadowboxing, pads, bags or coach-led conditioning with the same clocks and transitions.

CHESS CLOCK
- • One continuing chess game across all four chess rounds.
- • Six minutes total clock time per player.
- • The board position is preserved during boxing rounds.
- • Checkmate, resignation or running out of time ends the chess game.
- • If there is no result after the final chess round, the game is left unfinished.
TRANSITIONS
- • One minute between every round.
- • Gloves are removed or fitted with coach/corner support.
- • No chess advice, engine assistance or moves by a helper.
- • The coach tells everyone when the chess clock or boxing round starts again.
- • The coach pauses or stops a round if there is an equipment or safety problem.
Timing summary: a full run takes about 24 minutes: 12 minutes of chess, 6 minutes of boxing and 6 minutes of changeovers. Add a little time for the briefing, and remember that a coach may shorten or stop any round.
Weekly class safety
CONTROL COMES BEFORE COMPETITION
The boxing rounds are controlled technical sparring. This is not the place for knockout shots or uncontrolled power.
A coach can lower the intensity, replace a partner or stop contact at any time. Ordinary coaching adjustments do not have to end the rest of the session.
If contact stops because of a knockdown, blows or a medical concern, the session ends for that person and the club follows its normal medical procedure.
There is no boxing winner in the weekly class. The rounds are for practising technique, control and decision-making while tired.
Optional video feedback
REVIEW YOUR ROUNDS WITH AICO
AICO is a boxing video-analysis tool. When the footage can be processed, it can turn recorded sparring into video highlights and training statistics.
Visiting professionals and competitive amateurs can see how to visit H&G and try AICO on a suitable sparring session.
If AICO is available for a Chessboxing session, a coach may use it afterwards to revisit work rate, movement, clean punches and repeated habits with you.
The coach or referee still makes every live decision about safety, matching and when a round stops. AICO does not assess injuries or decide whether somebody is safe to spar.
Recording and review are optional. Consent and usable footage are required, and not every session will be recorded or reviewed.
What happens next
START WITH THE CLASS
Start with the class. If enough experienced people want to compete, H&G may later explore a separate public event. That would have its own rules and entry process. Joining the class would not enter you into a bout.

Register Interest on WhatsAppFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the H&G Chessboxing class running now?
Not yet. H&G is collecting interest before setting a date and price. Leave your details and we will contact you if the class launches.
Can complete boxing beginners register interest?
Yes. Beginners can combine chess with footwork, shadowboxing, pads and bags. New boxers start through Adult Recreational and only move into controlled sparring after coach approval, suitable matching and H&G's normal registration and medical requirements.
How good at chess do I need to be?
Around 1000 Rapid on Chess.com is a useful guide for the full format with six minutes per player, but it is not required to register interest. Lower-rated players can use foundation chess work with less time pressure, while players from other platforms or over-the-board chess can tell us their usual level.
Can somebody win the weekly class by knockout?
No. The boxing rounds are controlled technical sparring, not a knockout contest. A coach can lower the intensity, change partners or stop contact at any time. If contact stops because of a knockdown, blows or a medical concern, the session ends for that person and the club follows its normal medical procedure.
Does AICO decide who wins?
No. AICO is a boxing video-analysis tool that can help a coach revisit recorded work rate, movement, clean punches and repeated habits. Recording and review are optional, require consent and usable footage, and are not guaranteed for every session. The coach or referee makes every live decision.
Is this an official WCBO, WCBA or Chess.com event?
No. This would be an H&G training class, not an event run or approved by WCBO, WCBA, Chess.com or another chessboxing organisation.
Will H&G run a public chessboxing event?
Possibly. If enough experienced people want to compete, H&G may later explore a separate public event. That would have its own rules and entry process. Joining the class would not enter you into a bout.
