Best Boxing Gloves UK 2026

Club-tested picks for beginners, sparring, bag work and wrist support. Start with the quick answer, then use the route cards if you need one safe first pair rather than another overhyped glove list.

How this guide was built

Coach criteria firstWe prioritise hand protection, wrist support, purpose fit and whether a normal club boxer can train safely in the glove.

UK buying realityPrices and links are checked against UK availability, not just US reviews or manufacturer claims.

What to buy if you are not sure

Do not start with fight gloves. If you train in a normal boxing gym and want one pair, start with a protective 14oz or 16oz velcro training glove. That gives you enough padding for bags, pads and early technical work without needing someone to lace you up.

If sparring is likely, buy 16oz unless your coach tells you otherwise. If you are mainly hitting bags, a dedicated bag glove can be better. If you are buying for a child, fit and supervision matter more than the logo on the cuff.

The expensive beginner mistake

A lot of new boxers buy 10oz gloves because they look sharp online. In the gym, that is usually the wrong call. Smaller gloves punish poor hand position, give you less padding and make normal beginner training harder on your hands.

The short list

  • First pair for most adults: Pro-Box Leather Club Essentials or Adidas Speed Tilt 350, usually 14oz or 16oz.
  • If you spar regularly: Phenom SG-210, Rival RS11V, Rival RS100 or Winning if budget is not a problem.
  • If bags are the priority: Rival RB80, Rival RB50 or Fairtex BGV9 depending how much feedback you want. See the bag-work glove guide.
  • If your wrists worry you: Hayabusa T3 or Rival wrist-lock models, with technique caveats.

Coach decision routes

Choose the route before the glove

Most glove mistakes happen before the product page: the boxer buys for the wrong job. Pick the situation that matches your training, then compare the shortlist.

Ask at a trial first

I am a beginner

Start with a 14oz or 16oz velcro training glove. Use club gloves for a trial first, then buy once you know you will keep training.

Shortlist
  • • Pro-Box Leather Club Essentials
  • • Adidas Speed Tilt 350
  • • Geezers Elite Pro
Do not buy

Avoid 10oz fight gloves, lace-up gloves as your only pair, and anything with thin padding because it looked sharp online.

See beginner gloves →

I mostly hit bags

Prioritise hand protection, wrist stability and useful feedback. A firmer glove can make sense here, but it is not automatically safe for partner work.

Shortlist
  • • Rival RB80 Impulse
  • • Rival RB50 Intelli-Shock
  • • Fairtex BGV9
Do not buy

Avoid soft sparring pillows if you only care about bag feedback. Also avoid compact bag gloves if you secretly need one glove for sparring too.

Compare bag gloves →

I spar weekly

Choose 16oz sparring gloves and ask your coach before using them with a partner. Soft padding and stable wrists matter more than flash.

Shortlist
  • • Phenom SG-210
  • • Rival RS11V
  • • Winning MS-600
Do not buy

Avoid punchy fight-style gloves, small weights, and firm bag gloves. Your partner has to wear your buying decision.

Find sparring gloves →

I need wrist support

Buy structure, not a miracle cure. A supportive cuff can help, but pain needs wraps, technique checks and coach input before harder rounds.

Shortlist
  • • Hayabusa T3
  • • Rival RS11V
  • • Rival RFX Guerrero Intelli-Shock Bag Glove
Do not buy

Avoid tiny gloves, floppy cuffs, and any glove bought to compensate for bad wraps or a bent wrist on impact.

Compare wrist-support gloves →

I am buying for a child

Fit, supervision and the right weight matter more than brand. Children need gloves they can close, control and use safely.

Shortlist
  • • Adidas Hybrid Youth
  • • Geezers Youth Boxing Gloves
  • • Pro-Box Club Essentials in junior sizes
Do not buy

Avoid buying too big so they can grow into it. Bad fit ruins the session and makes good technique harder.

See kids gloves →

I am fighting amateur

Do not guess from online photos. Competition gloves depend on the current rule set, weight, club guidance and what your coach approves.

Shortlist
  • • Adidas Hybrid 350
  • • Sting Orion
  • • Top Ten competition models
Do not buy

Avoid buying competition gloves without coach approval. Some bouts use supplied gloves, and rule details matter.

Check amateur glove options →

I want the best under £100

Stay boring and protective. This is the sensible beginner and early club zone if you pick carefully.

Shortlist
  • • Pro-Box Leather Club Essentials
  • • Geezers Elite Pro
  • • Adidas Speed Tilt 350
Do not buy

Avoid spending the whole budget on brand theatre while skipping wraps, gumshield, boot basics and regular training.

Filter budget gloves →

I want the best under £150

This is where serious club value starts. You can buy a glove that lasts, protects and still makes sense for regular training.

Shortlist
  • • Phenom SG-210
  • • Rival RS11V
  • • Fairtex BGV9
Do not buy

Avoid buying a specialist glove before knowing whether you need bag feedback, sparring softness or one-pair flexibility.

Compare mid-price gloves →

I want the best under £250

Now you should be buying for preference, not panic. Fit, padding feel and use case matter more than the highest score.

Shortlist
  • • Fly X
  • • Rival RS100
  • • Hit N Move Balance
Do not buy

Avoid premium-looking gloves if you cannot explain what problem they solve for your own training.

Compare premium-value gloves →

I am still unsure

Do not buy yet. Book a trial, use club gloves, and let a coach see your hand size, training type and punching mechanics.

Shortlist
  • • Use club gloves first
  • • Ask about wraps
  • • Buy after your first sessions
Do not buy

Avoid buying from TikTok, Reddit or a discount code before you know whether you actually like training.

How we scored the gloves

The score is not pretend science. It is a coach-led buying score. We care about whether the glove protects your hands, holds your wrist, fits the job and makes sense for a UK buyer at the price.

We deliberately separate training gloves, sparring gloves, bag gloves and fight-style gloves because they are built for different jobs. A glove can be well made and still be the wrong buy for a beginner or regular sparring partner.

A glove can be excellent and still be wrong for your training. A compact bag glove, a soft sparring glove and a fight glove solve different problems. Mixing those up is how people waste money.

Scores are deliberately conservative when evidence is thin. A beautiful glove with only retailer copy is treated more cautiously than a less glamorous glove supported by long-term user reports, expert reviews, or gym use.

Hard comparisons

The comparisons people actually argue about

These are not tidy brand arguments. They are the buying splits people actually ask about once they have moved past the first-pair question.

Winning vs Fly vs Phenom

Coach verdict: Winning is the safest premium protection answer, Fly is the most refined fit-and-finish answer, and Phenom is the strongest UK-value serious sparring route.

Who should buy which: If budget is unlimited and hand protection is the priority, start with Winning. If you want premium feel and a sleeker glove, compare Fly. If you want a serious club glove without turning the purchase into jewellery, Phenom is the practical call.

Watch out: Do not assume premium means interchangeable. A soft sparring glove, compact training glove and fight glove can all be expensive and still solve different problems.

Rival vs Hayabusa for wrist support

Coach verdict: Rival tends to be better when you pick the exact model for the job. Hayabusa T3 is the simple structured-cuff answer for people who want maximum strap support.

Who should buy which: Choose Rival if you are already clear whether you need bag, sparring or fight kit. Choose Hayabusa if the main fear is wrist collapse and you want an easy velcro solution.

Watch out: No wrist system fixes a bent wrist on impact. Wraps, punch line and coach feedback matter more than any cuff.

Cleto Reyes vs Winning for sparring

Coach verdict: Winning is the safer partner-friendly sparring default. Cleto Reyes can be brilliant, but the padding profile and model choice matter more.

Who should buy which: Choose Winning when protection and forgiveness matter most. Choose Cleto only when you understand the model and your coach is happy with it for the rounds you do.

Watch out: The internet frames this as Mexico vs Japan. In a gym, the question is simpler: does your partner want to be hit by that glove for six rounds?

Fly X vs Fly Premium

Coach verdict: Fly X gives the Fly shape and feel at a more rational price. Fly Premium is the luxury version, not automatically the smarter training purchase.

Who should buy which: Buy Fly X if you want the fit and do not care about owning the top line. Buy Premium if materials, finish and long-term pride of ownership matter to you.

Watch out: Do not stretch into Premium if it means compromising on wraps, gumshield, shoes, membership or actual training.

Mexican gloves explained

Coach verdict: New Sporting, Bayoneta, Boxeo TM and Salvador are not one category. The appeal is usually feedback, craft and glove personality, but fit, padding and import friction vary.

Who should buy which: Consider them once you already know whether you like compact or roomy hand compartments, soft or punchy feedback, lace or velcro, and whether UK availability is stable.

Watch out: The hype can hide boring realities: returns, sizing, customs, long waits and whether the glove is too firm for the job.

Best glove by budget

Coach verdict: Under £50 is about not buying rubbish. £50 to £100 is the sensible beginner zone. £100 to £180 is the best serious-club value. £180 to £300 is enthusiast territory. £300+ should be deliberate, not impulsive.

Who should buy which: Most normal beginners should live between £50 and £120. Regular sparrers can justify £120 to £220. Premium only makes sense once the boxer can explain what they want from the glove.

Watch out: The worst purchase is not always the cheapest glove. It is the expensive glove bought before the boxer knows what problem it solves.

RDX gloves on Amazon

Coach verdict: RDX is popular because the gloves are cheap, visible on Amazon and easy to buy quickly. That does not make them bad, but it does explain why they rank lower than stronger club-training gloves.

Who should buy which: They can make sense for light pads, bags and a very tight first budget. If you are training regularly, sparring, or buying for a child who will stick with boxing, step up to a better-fitted glove when you can.

Watch out: Do not confuse Amazon popularity with gym suitability. Check the exact model, size, padding and returns, because RDX has several lines and they are not all the same glove.

10oz vs 12oz vs 14oz vs 16oz boxing gloves

Glove weight is not a toughness score. It changes padding, hand speed, fatigue, partner safety and how much feedback you get from the bag. The right answer starts with the session: bags, pads, sparring or competition.

If you are new and buying one pair, the boring answer is usually right: 14oz if you are mainly doing pads and bags, 16oz if sparring is likely or you are unsure. Smaller 10oz gloves belong in specific contexts, not normal beginner training.

WeightUse caseWho should buyWho should avoidBeginner answerSparring answer
8oz to 10ozCompetition, sharp pads, experienced small-glove workFighters or experienced boxers using them for a specific session under coach direction.Normal beginner classes, unsupervised hard bag rounds and all sparring.Do not buy as your first glove. It looks professional online but gives too little padding for most beginners.No. Use only if a coach gives an explicit specialist reason, not for normal partner rounds.
12ozPads, bags, lighter technical work and smaller adults who know they are not sparring.Smaller adults who want feedback on pads and bags and already have clean hand position.Bigger adults, anyone with wrist worries, and anyone trying to buy one pair for future sparring.Possible for a smaller adult doing pads and bags only. Not the safest one-pair answer.Usually no for adult sparring. Ask your coach before using 12oz with a partner.
14ozGeneral training, first proper pair, pads and bags with more protection. Most lighter or average-size beginners who are not sparring yet and want a useful club glove.Regular adult sparring unless your coach has approved that exact glove and context. The best compromise for many new adults if the work is mostly pads and bags. Not the default. Use 16oz for adult sparring unless your coach says otherwise.
16ozAdult sparring, cautious one-pair buying, bigger adults and hand protection.Adults who might spar, bigger beginners, or anyone who wants the safest first purchase.People who only want crisp bag feedback and know they will never spar. The safest one-pair answer if you are unsure, especially if sparring may happen later. The normal adult sparring default. Still needs coach approval and partner-safe padding.
18oz+Specific sparring contexts, heavier boxers and coach-led conditioning use.Heavier adults or experienced boxers whose gym deliberately wants heavier gloves. Most beginners buying online without guidance.Do not buy heavy gloves to look serious. Buy them only if your coach gives a reason. Can be right for some heavier boxers or gym rules, but it is not automatically better.

Beginner warning

Do not buy 10oz because it looks professional. For normal classes it gives less protection and makes poor contact mechanics more expensive.

One-pair answer

If you will train in a club and might spar later, 16oz velcro is the safest one-pair assumption. Ask your coach before using any glove for sparring.

Competition caveat

Fight glove weights depend on age, weight class, rule set and whether gloves are supplied. Never buy competition gloves without coach confirmation.

Glove closure guide

Velcro vs lace-up vs lace converters

For most beginners, velcro is not the cheap answer. It is the practical answer. You can put the glove on yourself, use it for classes, bags and pads, and get on with training.

Lace-up gloves can feel better and support the wrist more evenly, but only if someone ties them properly. Lace converters sit in the middle: useful if you want a lace glove without needing help every round.

Velcro

Best for: Beginners, classes, bag work, pads and anyone who needs to get gloves on without help.

Upside: Fast, simple and practical. You can train alone, adjust them mid-session and take them off quickly between drills.

Downside: Less locked-in than a good lace glove. Cheap velcro cuffs can loosen or feel bulky.

Buying answer: Default to velcro for your first proper pair unless your coach gives a reason not to.

Lace-up

Best for: Regular sparring, serious training blocks and boxers who have someone to tie their gloves properly.

Upside: Usually gives the best wrist wrap, cleanest fit and most even closure around the hand.

Downside: Not practical alone. Badly tied laces are not magic and loose lace ends are a gym nuisance.

Buying answer: Buy lace-up when you have a gym, coach or training partner who can lace you properly.

Lace-up with converters

Best for: People who like lace gloves but still need to train without a cornerman every session.

Upside: A useful compromise: lace-glove feel with a strap system so you can get them on yourself.

Downside: Bulkier than plain laces and not always as neat as a proper tie. Some converters fit certain cuffs better than others.

Buying answer: Good for experienced beginners moving into sparring, especially if the glove you want only comes in lace.

First pair

Buy velcro. The glove you actually use well is better than a lace glove that sits in your bag because nobody is there to tie it.

Sparring pair

Lace-up or lace converters can make sense once you are sparring regularly and care about a cleaner wrist wrap.

Do not overthink it

Closure choice does not replace wraps, correct glove size or coach approval. A badly chosen 16oz glove with laces is still badly chosen.

All gloves considered

This is the working comparison table. A glove does not need to win a category to appear here. Use it before the individual verdicts if you want to scan the whole field quickly.

Phenom SG-210 Lace Sparring Gloves

This is the glove we would start with for a committed adult who is sparring regularly and wants one serious pair. It is protective without feeling dead, has enough structure for clean punches, and is much easier to justify in the UK than chasing Winning stock at silly money.

Why it is herePhenom SG-210 Lace Sparring Gloves gives a credible sparring answer on protection, fit and hand position, not just brand noise.
Who should buy itserious sparring where protection, balance and UK availability matter more than a cheap price
What people get wrongThe common mistake is buying from photos and hype before deciding whether the glove is for bags, sparring, competition or a first month of classes.

Rival RB80 Impulse Bag Gloves boxing glove image
Best for bag workBest wrist support

Rival RB80 Impulse Bag Gloves

A dedicated bag glove should not pretend to be a sparring glove. The RB80 is good because it is honest: firm enough for bags, supportive through the cuff, and built for repeated impact rather than partner safety.

Why it is hereRival RB80 Impulse Bag Gloves has a clear bag or pad-work job. Do not treat every glove as if it should do everything.
Who should buy itbag work where wrist support and punch feedback matter
What people get wrongPeople often buy Rival by model number without separating bag gloves, sparring gloves and fight gloves. That is how good gloves get used for the wrong job.

Winning MS-600 16oz Lace-Up

Winning is still the soft-sparring benchmark, but the UK buying reality changes the recommendation. Brilliant glove, poor beginner purchase. Buy it when you already spar often, know your size, and accept that the price is part performance and part scarcity.

Rival RFX-Guerrero Intelli-Shock Bag Gloves

The RFX-Guerrero Intelli-Shock is not a general boxing glove. It is a high-end bag glove built around Rival's fight-glove fit, Wrist-Lock strap and D3O impact layer. That makes it a strong answer for committed bag work, but a poor one-pair purchase if sparring is on the table.

Brand comparison map

Rival

Best for modern wrist systems, Intelli-Shock bag gloves and serious sparring. Expensive, but usually honest about use case.

Phenom

One of the strongest UK-accessible premium alternatives to Winning.

Fly

Excellent comfort and presentation, but fit and wrist support need caveats.

Winning

The sparring comfort benchmark, with price and availability problems.

Cleto Reyes

Durable Mexican feedback and heritage, but not always the friendliest sparring feel.

Adidas

Interesting mid-range technology and amateur competition relevance.

Hayabusa

Wrist support leader, but polarising for pure boxing feel.

Venum

Wide range. Buy the right line at the right price, not the logo.

Everlast

Good lines exist, but cheap Everlast gear damages the brand trust.

Fairtex

Durable Thai-made gloves, strong for bag work and compact fit.

Twins

Comfortable and durable, but bulkier for pure boxing.

TopBoxer

Strong value if import cost and returns do not bother you.

Pro-Box / Pro-Am

Underrated UK club-value lane.

Sting

Amateur-boxing credibility and sensible starter options.

RDX

Budget and accessible, but quality ceiling needs blunt caveats.

BOXRAW

Interesting watchlist, not proven enough for a winner.

Grant / Di Nardo

Luxury and pro context, not rational beginner purchases.

Boxing glove FAQ

What oz boxing gloves should I buy?

Most adult beginners should start with 14oz or 16oz velcro training gloves. Smaller adults can often use 12oz or 14oz for pads and bags, but 16oz is the safer one-pair answer if sparring may happen later.

Can beginners use 10oz gloves?

Usually no. 10oz gloves are mainly for competition or experienced technical work. They offer less padding than most beginners need for normal class training.

Are lace-up gloves better than velcro?

Lace-up gloves can give the cleanest fit, but velcro is far more practical if you train without someone tying your gloves every round. Beginners should usually buy velcro.

Can I use bag gloves for sparring?

Only if the exact glove is suitable for sparring and your coach approves it. Compact bag gloves are often too firm or too small for safe partner work.

Are expensive boxing gloves worth it?

They can be, but only after you know how you train. A £200 sparring glove makes sense for regular sparring. It does not make sense before your first month of boxing.

Should women buy women-specific boxing gloves?

Sometimes, but hand fit matters more than marketing. Many women do better with compact gloves from Fairtex, Adidas, Fly, Rival or similar lines than with pink versions of poor gloves.

How often should I replace boxing gloves?

Replace them when padding collapses, the wrist no longer holds, the liner tears badly, or the glove smells beyond rescue. Drying gloves after every session matters more than buying sprays.

Do I need my own gloves for a first class?

Not at Honour and Glory. For a first trial, use club kit, learn what training feels like, then buy your own gloves once you know you will continue.

Still unsure what to buy?

Come to a class first. Use the club gloves, learn what training actually feels like, and buy once you know what your hands need.
