Boxing in London

London has one of the richest boxing traditions of any city in the world. From amateur clubs that have been producing champions since the Victorian era to modern fitness studios, there is a boxing gym for every goal and every budget.

How to Choose a Boxing Club

The right club depends on what you want from boxing. Here are the questions worth asking before you commit:

Amateur vs Fitness Boxing

These are genuinely different things, and it is worth understanding the distinction before choosing.

Amateur boxing clubs are affiliated with England Boxing. Coaches hold recognised qualifications. Boxers can compete in sanctioned bouts with proper medical oversight and officials. The training is technical, structured, and builds towards competition if you want it. Many amateur clubs also welcome recreational members who just want to train without fighting.

Boxing fitness studios use boxing as a workout format. Heavy bag classes, pad circuits, HIIT with boxing combinations. The focus is on calorie burn and intensity rather than technical development. These are great for fitness but will not teach you to box in any meaningful sense.

Neither is better. They serve different purposes. Just be honest with yourself about what you want.

What to Expect at Your First Session

Most boxing clubs offer a trial or taster session. Expect skipping, shadow boxing, bag work, and basic combinations. You will not spar on your first day at any reputable club. Bring a water bottle, wear comfortable trainers, and be prepared to work harder than you expect.

Boxing is physically demanding but deeply rewarding. The combination of technical skill, cardiovascular fitness, and mental focus is unlike any other sport. Most people who try it properly get hooked.
