NHS physical activity guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly. Boxing Science's pre-training conditioning advice covers the specific fitness qualities that help beginners get the most from their first boxing sessions.
"I will start boxing when I am fitter" is one of the most reliable ways to never start boxing.
Here is the thing: the fitness required for boxing comes from doing boxing. You cannot build boxing fitness doing other activities and then transfer it to boxing. The specific cardiovascular demands, the specific muscular endurance required, the specific coordination - these develop through boxing training, not before it.
What "Boxing Fitness" Actually Is
Boxing fitness is not generic cardiovascular fitness. It includes:
Shoulder and arm endurance. The ability to maintain guard position and continue throwing punches when the arms are tired. This develops through throwing punches, not through running.
Round-specific cardiovascular capacity. Three minutes on, one minute off - repeated for multiple rounds. This interval structure builds a specific kind of cardiovascular capacity. Even excellent general cardio fitness does not fully prepare someone for round-based boxing.
Coordination under fatigue. The ability to maintain technical precision when tired. This is a skill that develops only under the specific pressure of boxing training.
Mental endurance. The willingness to continue when the body wants to stop. This develops through practice.
None of these are addressable by running, cycling, or gym training before your first boxing session. They develop through boxing training.
What Actually Happens If You Come Unfit
You will find the first session hard. You will be breathing heavily. You will have to rest more than the more experienced members. You might need to adapt or skip some exercises.
This is fine. This is normal. This is what first sessions look like for almost everyone who has not boxed before.
A good boxing coach builds sessions that allow for different fitness levels. The warm-up is graduated. Modification options exist. You go at your own pace.
Nobody in the class is judging your fitness level. They remember their own first sessions.
The One Exception
If you are significantly deconditioned - genuinely sedentary for years, potentially with cardiovascular risk factors - speaking to your GP before starting any high-intensity exercise is sensible. Not as a prerequisite to boxing specifically, but as a prerequisite to any significant change in exercise intensity.
This is not "get fitter first." It is "rule out any medical concerns that require attention before you start."
What to Do Instead of Preparing First
Show up. Bring a water bottle, wear sports clothes, accept that it will be hard.
The first session is the preparation for the second session. The second session is the preparation for the third.
By session six, the fitness required for the session has developed from the sessions themselves. The plateau you feared does not exist. You get fitter by boxing.
At Honour and Glory, the Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening sessions are the starting point. The free trial is exactly that - a trial, not a test.
