Back to School Boxing: Start the New Term Strong

Back to School Boxing: Start the New Term Strong

September has a rhythm that January does not. The New Year resolution carries guilt and pressure - you should have started already, this is the year. September carries possibility - new term, fresh start, everything resets.

For starting boxing, September is actually better than January.

Why September Works

The weather cooperates. Summer heat has passed, the evenings are not yet dark and cold. Getting out of the house for an evening session feels easy rather than effortful.

The structure of the year shifts. School terms create natural rhythms even for people without children. Autumn feels like beginning. The motivation that drives January resolutions surfaces again in September without the associated guilt and pressure.

Gyms are less crowded. January brings a surge of new members that strains spaces and coach attention. September brings a smaller, more sustained intake of people who are really interested rather than resolution-driven.

The September Psychology

There is research on what psychologists call "temporal landmarks" - specific moments in time that people use to separate the current self from the past self and start fresh. Birthdays, New Year, the first of a month, the start of a new school year (source).

September is one of the strongest temporal landmarks for adults in the UK because of how thoroughly the academic calendar shaped childhood. The return from summer holiday, new uniform, new year group - that psychology persists into adulthood.

Boxing training started in September tends to stick better than training started in other months, because the temporal landmark effect provides genuine motivation that carries through the difficult early weeks.

What Starting in September Looks Like at Six Months Out

By March, a person who started boxing in September will have trained through autumn, through the Christmas period, and into the new year. They will be through the initial awkward phase, into genuine competence. They will have made connections at the gym. Boxing will be part of their week.

This outcome is more likely from a September start than a January start because the temporal landmark motivation is more sustainable - it builds rather than decays from the start.

How to Start Well

Do not overthink the preparation. You do not need to get fit first, buy equipment first, or research boxing extensively first. Show up to the free trial, see what it is like, and decide from that position (source).

The overthinking that precedes January resolutions is part of why they fail. The clean September decision - I am going to try this - does not require the same investment.

At Honour and Glory, the Adult Recreational class runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. The free trial is the starting point.
