Boxing Classes for Beginners Near Bermondsey

A lot of people from Bermondsey and the surrounding streets want to try boxing but put it off because they assume they need to be fit, experienced, or young. None of those things are true. Every person currently training at Honour and Glory Boxing Club was a beginner once, and most started with exactly the same doubts you have now.

The club is in Kidbrooke, SE3. It is 24 minutes from Bermondsey by car, or reachable by rail via New Cross and then toward Blackheath. Free parking is on site.

What Happens in a Beginner Session

When you first arrive, a coach will take time to show you the basics. That means stance, guard, footwork, and the fundamental punches. You will not be thrown into sparring on your first visit. You will not be expected to keep up with people who have been training for years.

The recreational adults class runs Monday to Friday, 7:30pm to 9pm. It is a mixed class, so you will be training alongside people at various stages. The coaches know how to manage that and you will not be left to figure things out on your own.

Why Start with a Real Boxing Club

There is a difference between a boxing-themed fitness class and a proper boxing club. The difference shows up quickly. At a proper club, the coaching is technical. You learn how to move, how to defend, and how to punch with structure and intention. The fitness follows from that. At a branded gym class, you mostly hit things in time to music.

Honour and Glory is ABA affiliated and its coaches hold BBBofC licences. That is the national governing body and the professional boxing regulatory body. It tells you the standard of instruction you are going to receive.

The Cost and Commitment

Each session costs £10. There is no joining fee. There is no contract. There is no direct debit. You pay for the sessions you come to.

If you come once and decide it is not for you, you have spent £10. If you come for a year, you pay as you go. Most beginners find they want to come back, but you are never locked in.

What to Bring to Your First Session

Wear comfortable gym kit. Bring a water bottle. If you have hand wraps, bring them. If you do not, the gym has gloves to lend you while you get started. Your coach will show you how to wrap your hands before you buy your own equipment.

Do not worry about being unfit. Boxing training will improve your fitness. That is the point.

How Progress Happens

Most beginners notice a change within the first four to six weeks. The warm-up starts to feel less brutal. The combinations come more naturally. The footwork that felt awkward at first becomes a habit. Progress in boxing is incremental but consistent when you train regularly.

After three months, most people who started with no boxing background are doing combinations, working pads with a coach, and developing a sense of their own style. The journey from first session to capable club boxer is not as long as most beginners expect.

The Club

Founded in 2020, the club has over 200 members. It holds a 4.9-star Google rating from more than 40 reviews. Members come from across south-east London, including a number who travel regularly from Bermondsey and Peckham.

Head coach Anton Pattenden has built a club that takes the sport seriously without making it unwelcoming to new people. The balance is right, which is why members stay.
