Boxing Near Abbey Wood (2026 Guide)

Abbey Wood has changed quickly. The Elizabeth line opened the area up, and a wave of new residents arrived with it. Young families moved in, the estate at Thamesmead expanded, and the streets around Abbey Wood station got a lot busier.

What has not changed is the absence of a serious boxing gym within walking distance. If you live near the Lesnes Abbey ruins or off Harrow Manorway, you have a drive to make. The good news is that Honour and Glory Boxing Club is 20 minutes away in Kidbrooke, and it is worth the trip.

Where We Are

Honour and Glory is based at 122 Broad Walk, Kidbrooke, London SE3 8ND. Free parking is available on site, which makes the journey straightforward whether you come via the A2016 or cut through Plumstead.

From Abbey Wood station, most members from the area drive and are on the mats in under 25 minutes. The free parking removes one of the usual frustrations of urban gym visits.

What We Offer

This is an ABA affiliated club run by BBBofC licensed coaches. We are not a franchise or a chain. We opened in 2020 and built the membership to over 200 people through word of mouth and the quality of the coaching.

Boxing coaching at Honour and Glory

Sessions run Monday to Friday, 7:30pm to 9pm. Adults pay £10 per session with no contract, no joining fee, and no direct debit. You come when you can and pay as you go.

We have separate programmes for children. Infants aged 5 to 9 and Juniors aged 10 to 16 train from 5pm on weekdays. Women's sessions run on Saturdays from 10:30am to 12pm at the same rate.

Who Trains Here

Members come from across south east London: Plumstead, Thamesmead, Woolwich, Charlton, and increasingly from Abbey Wood itself. The gym has over 200 members and holds 4.9 stars on Google from more than 40 reviews.

Some train for competition. Most come for fitness, structure, and the discipline that boxing gives you that the gym floor cannot. The two groups train alongside each other without friction.

What to Expect on Your First Session

Wear comfortable training kit. Bring water. Hand wraps are useful but not essential for a first session. The coaching staff can talk you through what to bring before you arrive.

The first session is a trial. You will not be judged on what you know. You will be introduced to the basics: stance, guard, jab, movement. By the end of the hour you will have learned something concrete and worked hard.

What the Gym Has

The facility includes a full-size ring, heavy bags, speed bags, and floor space for conditioning work. The coaching is technical and progressive. Members are taught properly, not just put through circuits.

The coaching team takes the sport seriously. The standard applies equally to recreational members and those working towards competition.

The Journey from Abbey Wood

The most direct route is through Plumstead and along the A2016 towards Kidbrooke. Allow 20 to 25 minutes depending on the time of day. The car park at 122 Broad Walk is free and available for all members.

Members from Plumstead and Thamesmead make similar journeys and find the club well worth the drive.
