Best Boxing Classes in Blackheath
Boxing Classes in Blackheath: What to Actually Look For
There are more places offering boxing classes in Blackheath than there were five years ago. Most of them are not boxing classes. They are fitness classes that use boxing equipment and boxing vocabulary while teaching very little of the actual sport.
This is not automatically bad. If you want a hard workout using mitts and bags, boxercise formats deliver that. But if you want to learn boxing - to actually understand the sport, to develop real technique, to be able to hit with accuracy and defend yourself properly - you need to know the difference before you sign up.

What a Real Boxing Class Looks Like
A genuine boxing class spends time on technical foundations:
- Stance and guard position
- The jab: mechanics, timing, extension, recovery
- The cross: rotation, weight transfer, shoulder position
- Hooks and uppercuts: angles, body mechanics, range
- Defensive movement: slipping, rolling, footwork
In a real session, your coach will correct your technique. Not vaguely - specifically. Your elbow is dropping. Your weight is on your back foot when it should be on your front. Your jab is wide of the centreline. These corrections are what coaching looks like.
In a fitness class with boxing branding, the emphasis is on output - calories, rounds, heart rate. The technique is incidental. Neither approach is dishonest about what it is. You just need to know which one you are choosing.

What the Blackheath Area Has Available
Blackheath is 8 to 10 minutes from Honour and Glory at 122 Broad Walk, Kidbrooke, SE3 8ND. We run recreational adult classes on weekday evenings from 5pm and weekend sessions from 8:30am.
The gym is England Boxing affiliated. Coaches hold BBBofC licences. The standard of technical coaching is consistent across all sessions, which is not something every gym in south-east London can say.
Adult sessions cost £10 per session. Junior classes for ages 10-16 cost £8.50. There are no contracts and no joining fees.

A Boxing Gym Is Not the Same as a Gym That Offers Boxing
Most large gyms near Blackheath offer boxing classes. They are a popular addition to a fitness timetable: energetic, good for cardio, easy to drop into. If you are looking for a workout that happens to use gloves, they will do the job.
Honour and Glory is a boxing club, not a fitness club that offers boxing. Everything here exists for one purpose. The coaches are boxing coaches. The equipment is boxing equipment. The sessions are structured around developing boxing skill, not just burning calories.
If you want to get fit, most gyms will help. If you want to learn to box, a boxing club is the only place that will.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Join Anywhere
Before committing to any boxing gym, ask these questions and listen carefully to the answers:
"What qualifications do your coaches hold?" - England Boxing coaching qualifications are the standard for amateur boxing. A coach with no listed qualifications teaching boxing is a risk.
"Do you have England Boxing affiliation?" - Relevant if you ever want to compete or want the assurance of a regulated training environment.
"Can I watch a session before I sign up?" - A good gym will say yes immediately. Hesitation is informative.
"What is the maximum class size?" - Technical coaching in groups of 20 or more is compromised. You will not get enough individual attention to develop properly.
Starting Well
The biggest mistake beginners make is choosing a gym based on convenience or price alone. Both matter, but they are not the main thing. A gym that is slightly further away with genuinely good coaching will do more for you in three months than a convenient mediocre option will do in a year.
