Private Boxing Sessions vs Group Classes

Both private boxing sessions and group classes are available at Honour and Glory. They are not competing products. They are different tools for different stages of development. The question is which one is right for where you are now.

The Core Difference

Private Boxing Sessions

  • • 100% of the coach's attention for 60 minutes
  • • Technical correction on every rep
  • • Pace and intensity set entirely by you
  • • No waiting for equipment or drills
  • • From £30 per session

Group Boxing Classes

  • • Social energy and shared accountability
  • • Coach attention divided across 8-15 people
  • • Fixed class pace - may be above or below your level
  • • Community built around shared sessions
  • • £5-£10 per session

What Private Sessions Are For

Private sessions are for focused technical development. If you want to fix a specific problem, whether that is your guard dropping when you punch, your footwork closing down too early, or your jab lacking extension, a private session is how you address it properly. The coach can stop the drill, correct the error, and repeat until the new movement pattern is established.

Private sessions are also the fastest route for complete beginners. In a group class, the instructor divides attention across everyone in the room. Your incorrect hook might go uncorrected for several sessions because the coach is helping someone else. In a private session, every error gets corrected immediately. Most beginners who start with private training reach the standard required for group classes in half the time.

If you have a specific goal, competition preparation, fitness for a particular event, returning from injury, private sessions let the coach build a programme entirely around that goal. A group class must cater to everyone.

What Group Classes Are For

Group boxing classes develop something that private sessions cannot: the ability to train in an environment with other people. You learn to maintain your focus, your guard, and your work rate when there is noise and movement around you. This matters particularly if competition is ever a goal.

The social dimension of group classes is also a genuine benefit. Research in exercise adherence consistently finds that social connection and belonging predict long-term attendance better than individual goal-setting. Many of our members keep coming because of the people they train alongside, not just because of the boxing. That element does not exist in the same way in private sessions.

Cost is another factor. Group recreational adult classes at Honour and Glory cost significantly less per session than private training. For people training three or four times per week, the group class model is far more sustainable financially.

The Optimal Path

The ideal progression for most people is private sessions first, then group classes, with occasional private sessions to address specific issues as they arise. Several sessions of 1-to-1 training give you a technical foundation that lets you extract more value from group classes. You arrive already understanding stance, guard, and basic combinations. You can follow the class at pace and ask better questions.

For those with competition goals, the balance shifts back toward more private sessions as the event approaches. Ring craft, specific combination drilling, and tactical preparation are best done 1-to-1 rather than in a group setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I start with private sessions or group classes?

How many private sessions do I need before group classes?

Most beginners are ready for group classes after 3-5 private sessions. Your coach will tell you when you are ready.

Can I do both private sessions and group classes?

Yes, and many members do. Private sessions for technical work, group classes for fitness and community.

Are private sessions available for juniors?

Yes. Private boxing sessions are available for juniors aged 16+ at Honour and Glory.
