Boxing PT vs Online Coaching

Online coaching became popular during lockdown and has stuck around. It is cheaper and more flexible than in-person training. For some goals, it works. For boxing, it has a fundamental limitation that no Zoom call or video review can solve.

The Core Difference

In-Person Boxing PT

  • • Real-time technique correction on every punch
  • • Pad work: impossible to replicate remotely
  • • Coach sees angles and errors you cannot self-identify
  • • Immediate feedback loop accelerates learning
  • • From £30 per session at H&G

Online Coaching

  • • Lower cost with flexibility for scheduling
  • • Written programmes delivered remotely
  • • Video review with delayed feedback
  • • Works for some goals: strength, conditioning
  • • £50-£200/month for programme plus check-ins

What Online Coaching Cannot Do

Online coaching works well for strength training. A programme of squats, deadlifts, and bench press can be delivered remotely, reviewed by video, and corrected over time. The feedback loop is slower than in-person, but the movements are learnable from video review because the coach can see the whole movement from a fixed camera angle.

Boxing technique is different. The critical errors in a beginner's jab, elbow flare, dropped guard, weight transfer, and rotation, are three-dimensional and often invisible from a single camera angle. Pad work, which is the primary teaching tool for boxing technique, requires a coach physically in front of you. There is no remote equivalent.

Footwork can be filmed and reviewed, but the spatial relationship between a boxer and their opponent, even imagined, cannot be replicated in a home environment without a partner. A good boxing PT coach constantly repositions during sessions to teach movement in relation to a physical presence. Online coaching cannot provide this.

The Cost Reality

Online coaching looks cheaper until you factor in what you need to make it work. A home boxing setup requires a heavy bag (£80-£200), bag gloves (£25-£60), hand wraps (£8-£15), and ideally a freestanding bag for hook and uppercut work (£150-£300). That is £260-£575 in equipment before your first session.

Then there is the quality of the feedback. Online boxing coaches who offer genuine technical review typically charge £100-£300 per month for a programme and weekly video check-ins. For that price, you could have four in-person boxing PT sessions at Honour and Glory, with real-time coaching and access to a full boxing gym with a ring, bags, and all equipment included.

For most beginners, in-person boxing PT delivers faster technical development, better accountability, and more enjoyment than the home-based online alternative. The gym environment is part of the product.

When Online Coaching Makes Sense

Online coaching makes sense for conditioning and strength supplementation if you already have a strong boxing foundation. An experienced boxer who travels frequently might use online programming to maintain fitness while away from their gym. Someone recovering from injury might use online coaching to maintain training volume for parts of the body not affected.

But for beginners learning boxing, or for anyone who wants to develop real technique, in-person coaching is not a premium option. It is the only option that actually works. The tactile, real-time, three-dimensional nature of boxing instruction cannot be replicated on a screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I learn boxing online?

You can learn the theory and some basics through video, but real boxing technique requires in-person instruction. Pad work, which is essential for developing timing and technique, cannot be done remotely.

Is online fitness coaching cheaper than boxing PT?

On a per-session basis, yes. But when you factor in home equipment costs and the lower quality of feedback, in-person boxing PT often provides better value for beginners.

Can I supplement boxing PT with online training?

Yes. Many of our members do conditioning work at home between sessions. Your boxing PT coach can advise on appropriate supplementary exercises to do independently.

How do I know if in-person coaching is worth it?

If your goal is to actually learn to box, in-person coaching is not optional. If your goal is general fitness with boxing-style exercises, online programming may be sufficient.
