Why parents choose boxing

Boxing teaches children things that football, swimming and gymnastics do not. It is individual - there is nowhere to hide and nobody else to blame. Every session is a small lesson in discipline, focus and self-belief.

Confidence

The biggest change parents notice. Children who box carry themselves differently. They make eye contact, speak up, stand taller. It comes from knowing they can do hard things.

Discipline

Sessions have structure. Children follow instructions, wait their turn, respect their coaches and training partners. These habits carry over into school and home life.

Focus

Boxing demands concentration. You cannot throw a proper combination while thinking about something else. For children who struggle to focus in school, boxing can be transformative.

Fitness

Boxing is a full-body workout disguised as a skill. Children get fitter without realising it because they are having fun. Coordination, agility, stamina - it all improves session by session.

Resilience

Learning to box means learning to fail and try again. A combination that feels impossible in week one becomes second nature by week six. That process teaches children something valuable about persistence.

Belonging

A boxing gym is a community. Children make friends across ages and backgrounds. They cheer each other on, help each other improve, and feel part of something bigger than themselves.

Questions parents ask

What age can my child start boxing? +
We take children from age 7. Our Junior Recreational class (7-16) is specifically designed for younger children, with age-appropriate activities and a focus on fun, movement and basic coordination. It is not a full boxing class - think of it as an introduction to the sport through games and structured play.
Is boxing safe for children? +
Yes. Our children's classes are non-contact for beginners. Children learn technique on pads and bags, not against each other. All our coaches are DBS checked, safeguarding certified and qualified to coach children. We follow England Alliance Boxing (formerly ABA) guidelines for youth coaching. Read more in our guide: Is boxing safe for kids?
My child is 7/8/9 - are they too young? +
Not at all. Seven is the youngest age for new joiners, and our younger Junior Recreational sessions are built for this age group. At 7-9, the emphasis is on coordination, listening and having fun. Boxing skills come gradually and naturally in a safe, structured environment.
My child is shy or anxious - will they cope? +
Most children who join us are nervous at first. Our coaches are experienced at settling new members in. Sessions have a clear structure which helps anxious children feel safe, and the small class sizes (max 20-25) mean nobody gets lost in the crowd. We find that boxing builds confidence remarkably quickly.
Does my child need any equipment? +
For the first few sessions, just comfortable clothes and trainers. We provide gloves and wraps to borrow. Once they are committed, most parents buy their own wraps (around £5) and eventually a pair of gloves (£20-30 for a good starter pair). See our equipment guide for recommendations.
Will my child have to fight? +
No. Competitive boxing is entirely optional and only happens when a young person wants to progress to that level, their parents agree, and the coaches feel they are ready. The vast majority of our junior members train recreationally and never compete. Both paths are equally valued here.
What about girls? +
Girls are absolutely welcome. We have girls training across Junior Recreational and Junior Competitive. Women's and girls' boxing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, and we actively encourage female participation. We also run a dedicated Women's Boxing session on Saturdays.
How much does it cost? +
Junior Recreational is £8.50/session and Junior Competitive is £8.50/session until first amateur fight, then £5/session. Pay as you go - no contracts, no monthly membership, no joining fee. First session is always free.
Can I watch? +
Yes. Parents are welcome to stay and watch, especially for the first few sessions while your child settles in. We have a viewing area near the entrance.
My child is 14/15/16 - is it too late to start? +
Absolutely not. Teenagers pick up boxing quickly because they have better coordination and focus than younger children. Many successful boxers did not start until their mid-teens. Our Juniors sessions cater for complete beginners through to those preparing for their first bout.

Your child's safety is not negotiable

Every coach working with children at Honour & Glory is DBS checked and safeguarding certified. We follow England Alliance Boxing guidelines, maintain appropriate ratios and take child protection seriously. It is the minimum standard, and we exceed it.
