ADULT COMPETITIVE
Mon/Wed/Fri 7:30-9:00pm
£5/session
Adult Competitive is the competition-track programme for adults aged 17 and over. Members train a minimum of three times per week and are expected to compete. Those who stop competing are moved to the recreational class. Training is serious. Sessions are structured around technical development, sparring, pad rounds, and fight preparation. If you want to compete at ABA level, this is where you train.
Honour and Glory is affiliated with the Amateur Boxing Alliance (England). All our coaches hold British Boxing Board of Control licences and have worked with fighters competing at regional and national level. The club has produced competitive adults who go on to compete in ABA championships and open shows across the country.
Competition is not compulsory. Some boxers train in the Adult Competitive group purely for the training environment and standard - the harder sessions, the controlled sparring, the technical focus - without competing. That is a legitimate choice and coaches will work with you either way.
HOW TRAINING IS STRUCTURED
TECHNICAL SESSIONS
Coaches work with boxers individually and in pairs on specific technical elements. Combination work, defensive patterns, ring generalship. The level of detail here is different from a fitness class. Mistakes are corrected, not ignored.
PAD ROUNDS
Three-minute rounds on the pads with your coach. This is where combinations are worked at pace and your coach challenges you to apply technique under pressure. Most sessions include three to four pad rounds.
SPARRING
Controlled sparring is a core part of Adult Competitive training. You are matched with someone of similar weight and experience. The coach sets the intensity and watches the rounds. Headguard, gumshield, and full protection are always required.
FIGHT CAMP
When you have a bout scheduled, training shifts to fight preparation. Volume increases, sparring is more frequent, and conditioning is tailored to your weight category and the demands of three competitive rounds.

THE COMPETITION PATHWAY
ABA affiliated boxers compete at open shows, which are multi-bout events typically held at leisure centres and sports halls across London and the South East. From there, strong performances can lead to regional championships and beyond.
The ABA system uses a bout card system - your record and coach recommendations determine how quickly you progress to harder competition. Nobody is put in over their head. The pathway is managed carefully.
If you have boxed elsewhere before and want to train at Honour and Glory, bring your bout card or ABA registration details. We can transfer your record.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Do I need previous boxing experience to join Adult Competitive?
You do not need competitive experience, but you should have a solid foundation in boxing fundamentals - stance, guard, basic combinations, and footwork. If you are a complete beginner, start in the recreational adults class first. Your coach will tell you when you are ready to move across.
How often will I compete?
That depends on your development and readiness. Some boxers compete several times a year, others take longer between bouts. Your coach controls the timeline based on your fitness, skill level, and confidence. You will never be pushed into a bout before you are ready.
What does a typical training week look like?
Sessions run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. A typical week involves technical work, pad rounds, bag rounds, and sparring on at least one session. As you approach a bout, training intensity increases and sparring becomes more frequent and specific to your opponent.
Is there a weight limit for amateur boxing?
Amateur boxing is organised by weight category. When you compete, you will be matched at a weight that suits your build. Your coach will help you understand which weight category is appropriate and whether any weight management is needed.
What kit do I need?
For training: your own gloves, wraps, gumshield, and groin protector. For sparring: a headguard. When competing, you will also need approved amateur boxing shorts and vest. We can advise on what to buy. While you get settled in, we can lend gloves and wraps.
