Amateur Boxing in Shooters Hill: What You Need to Know
Amateur boxing has a more structured path than most people realise. If you live in Shooters Hill and are thinking about competing, or simply want to train with the seriousness that competition-focused coaching demands, it helps to understand what the amateur system actually involves before you walk into a gym.
This is not about whether you are tough enough. It is about whether you understand the process well enough to make informed decisions.

The ABA System
Amateur boxing in England has two separate major routes: the Amateur Boxing Alliance and England Boxing. Each has its own affiliation, coaching qualification and competition rules. The correct pathway depends on which body your club belongs to.
This matters to you as a Shooters Hill resident for one practical reason: not every gym that calls itself a boxing gym is properly affiliated. Some operate outside the system entirely. If you want to compete at any sanctioned amateur level - from club shows through to national championships - you need to train at an affiliated club.
Honour and Glory is fully ABA affiliated. Our coaching team is ABA/Alliance-credentialed, with BBBofC professional experience led by Anton Pattenden. Our Competitive pathway trains members who compete at club shows across south London and the south-east.
What Amateur Training Actually Involves
The gap between recreational boxing training and competition preparation is substantial. This is not a criticism of recreational training - it is simply a different thing.
Amateur competition training requires:
- Technical conditioning at much higher intensity than recreational classes
- Regular sparring with structured feedback
- Weight management and monitoring
- Competition-specific strategy development
- England Boxing medical registration
The time commitment is also higher. Competing boxers typically train four to six times per week. One or two recreational sessions will not prepare you for a bout. That is simply not how the sport works.

Starting the Process from Shooters Hill
The first step is straightforward: come in for a trial session. You do not need to declare any intention to compete. Most people who eventually enter amateur competition spent their first several months training recreationally, developing the foundation the sport requires.
What you should declare is your interest. Tell your coach from the beginning that you want to understand what competition preparation looks like. A good coach will be honest about timelines and expectations. Someone who tells you they can have you ready to compete in six weeks is either lying or has not properly assessed you.
Realistic timelines for someone starting from scratch: eight to twelve months of consistent training before most coaches would consider you ready for a first amateur bout. That sounds long. It is also accurate. Rushing the process produces undercooked boxers who have poor experiences in their first bout and often do not come back.
