Women Boxing Gloves UK Fit Checklist

Women Boxing Gloves UK Fit Checklist

This page is the UK fit checklist for women buying boxing gloves, not the main ranked list. For the broader rankings, use our main Best Boxing Gloves for Women Training guide. This checklist focuses on hand compartment, wrist support, glove weight, and what to avoid.

If you are choosing a pair now, use the 2026 glove hub first. The maintained best boxing gloves UK guide compares the wider field and calls out gloves by job: beginner training, bag work, sparring, wrist support, comfort, durability, and overall quality. For first-pair guidance, use best beginner boxing gloves UK. For one-purpose buys, check best sparring gloves UK or best bag gloves UK.

England Boxing's equipment standards for women's boxing define the requirements for competition-approved gloves. Hayabusa's women's boxing gear research has shown that gender-specific sizing affects both comfort and hand protection.

The Fit Problem

Most boxing gloves on the market are designed around male hand dimensions. Women's hands are, on average, narrower across the knuckles, shorter in the fingers, and smaller in the wrist circumference. A glove designed for a male hand will feel loose, shift on impact, and provide inadequate wrist support for many women.

This is not a minor issue. Ill-fitting gloves cause wrist injuries, knuckle bruising, and the frustrating feeling that something is wrong with your technique when the problem is actually your equipment.

The good news: several manufacturers now produce genuinely women-specific gloves rather than just shrinking men's models and adding pink. Here is what works.

What Size Glove Do Women Need?

Glove weight is measured in ounces (oz). The standard recommendations:

8-10oz: Competition gloves. Used for bouts, not for training. Most women compete in 10oz gloves.

12oz: Light bag work and pad work. Suitable for women under approximately 55kg who are doing bag and pad work only (no sparring).

14oz: The most versatile weight for most women. Provides adequate protection for bag work, pad work, and light sparring. This is the weight most coaches recommend for women who want one pair of gloves that does everything.

16oz: Sparring gloves. The extra padding protects both you and your sparring partner. Mandatory for most gym sparring sessions. Can feel heavy on smaller hands, but the protection is worth it.

If you are buying one pair, buy 14oz. If you are buying two, buy 12oz for bag work and 16oz for sparring.

What to Look For in Fit

Wrist closure. Velcro (hook-and-loop) closures are standard for training gloves and allow you to adjust the tightness each time you put them on. Lace-up gloves provide a better fit but require someone to lace you in. For training, Velcro is practical. For competition, lace-up with a coach to tie them.

Thumb attachment. The thumb should be attached to the body of the glove to prevent thumb injuries during hooks and uppercuts. All modern training gloves should have this. Check before buying.

Padding distribution. Feel the padding across the knuckles. It should be firm but with some give. Press the back of the glove - there should be minimal padding there, with the bulk protecting the hitting surface and the wrist.

Hand compartment shape. Put the glove on with a hand wrap underneath (always try gloves with wraps, because that is how you will wear them). Make a fist inside the glove. Your fingers should close naturally without feeling cramped. The thumb should sit comfortably in the thumb compartment without being forced into an unnatural position.

Gloves Worth Buying in the UK

Cleto Reyes (from approximately £120). Mexican-made, widely regarded as the best training gloves available. The fit tends to be snug and suits smaller hands well. The leather breaks in over time and conforms to your hand shape. These are an investment that lasts years. Available from Sugaray's and specialist boxing retailers.

Twins Special (from approximately £70). Thai-made gloves with excellent padding distribution and good wrist support. The BGVL3 model is the most popular. Wide Velcro strap. These run slightly large, so try before buying or order a size down from what you would expect.

Fairtex BGV1 (from approximately £65). Another Thai brand with a strong reputation. Slightly more compact fit than Twins, which works well for women with smaller hands. Good for bag work and pad work. Durable.

Adidas Speed TILT 150 (from approximately £40). A mid-range option that is widely available on the high street. The TILT technology angles the fist slightly, which some users find more natural for punching. Good wrist support. Not as durable as Cleto Reyes or Twins but adequate for beginners and intermediate training.

RDX Women's F7 (from approximately £30). A budget option designed specifically for women. The hand compartment is narrower than unisex models. Adequate padding for beginners. Will need replacing after 12-18 months of regular use.

What to Avoid

Unbranded Amazon gloves under £20. The padding deteriorates quickly, the wrist support is inadequate, and the hand compartment is usually poorly shaped. False economy.

Gloves that say "women's" but are just smaller men's gloves in different colours. The hand compartment shape matters more than the size. Check reviews from women specifically.

Sharing gym gloves long-term. Gym gloves for trials are fine. For regular training, your own gloves are more hygienic, better-fitting, and genuinely improve your training experience.

Hand Wraps Matter More Than Gloves

The most expensive gloves in the world will not protect your hands if your wraps are done badly. Cotton wraps that cover the wrist, knuckles, and thumb web are the foundation of hand protection. The glove goes over the top.

At Honour and Glory, the coaches show new members how to wrap properly in their first session. It takes a few weeks to become automatic, but correct wrapping becomes second nature with practice.
