Boxing for 5 Year Olds Near Woolwich
Five is not too young for boxing. Parents often assume it is, but that assumption is based on what they see on television - which bears no resemblance to what actually happens in an infants boxing session.
At Honour and Glory, children aged 5 to 9 train in a dedicated infants programme. It is about coordination, confidence, and listening. The actual hitting is very much secondary at this age.
What the Infants Programme Looks Like
Sessions run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5pm to 6pm. The format is structured but not rigid. Children warm up together, work on basic movement and coordination drills, practise pad work with coaches, and cool down.
BBBofC licensed coaches run every session. These are not enthusiastic volunteers - they are qualified coaches who know how to manage a room full of energetic young children and still get results.
The cost is £10 per session. No joining fee, no contract, no minimum commitment. If your child tries it and loves it, great. If it is not for them, you have lost nothing.
Getting There from Woolwich

The 178 bus from Woolwich town centre stops on Broad Walk, directly outside the gym. For a Tuesday or Thursday 5pm session, parents leaving Woolwich at 4:30pm are there in good time.
Alternatively, Woolwich Arsenal station is two stops from Kidbrooke on Southeastern rail. From Kidbrooke the gym is an 8-minute walk. For parents collecting children from school in the Woolwich area, the train can be the quicker option.
By car, take the A206 west from Woolwich then the A2 south. Exit at the Kidbrooke interchange. Free parking at the venue means you are not circling the block while your child is late for class.
Why Boxing and Not Something Else
This is a question worth answering honestly. Boxing teaches children to control their bodies, take instruction, manage frustration, and respect other people in the gym. Those are useful life skills that transfer well beyond sport.
It is also physical. Children who sit at desks all day and then sit in front of screens at home need to move properly. An hour of infants boxing does that better than most activities on offer in Woolwich SE18.
The infants boxing programme at Honour and Glory has produced some strong junior fighters over the years. But the majority of children who come through aged 5 to 9 are not destined for competition - they are just healthier, more confident, and better coordinated for having done it.
Parents from Shooters Hill and Kidbrooke make the same journey regularly. Their children are enrolled for one term and staying for three years. That says something.
