Boxing Classes for Beginners Near Woolwich

By H&G Team 2 min read 9 min drive from Woolwich

The number of adults who want to try boxing but assume they have left it too late is remarkable. Thirty-five is not old for boxing. Neither is forty-five. The gym does not care about your age. It cares about your attitude.

Honour and Glory takes complete beginners regularly, and the recreational adult programme is designed with exactly this in mind.

What Beginner Sessions Actually Involve

You will not be sparring on your first session. Or your second. Or probably your tenth. Beginners at Honour and Glory learn stance, movement, the basic punches, and how to work the bag. Coaches do not throw you in at the deep end.

The recreational adults programme runs Monday to Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Most beginners find the weekday evening sessions easiest to fit around work. Sessions cost £10 each, no contract, no joining fee.

The Intimidation Question

Inside Honour and Glory Boxing Club

Most people worry about being the least experienced person in the room. That is a reasonable concern, but it is not the experience at Honour and Glory. The club has a 4.9 Google rating from 60-plus members, and the comments about atmosphere come up constantly.

Head coach Anton Pattenden has been coaching since before the club was founded in 2020. He knows what a nervous beginner looks like and he knows how to get them moving without making the experience uncomfortable.

Getting There from Woolwich

From Woolwich SE18, the gym at 122 Broad Walk in Kidbrooke is roughly 9 minutes by car. Take the A206 west, join the A2 southbound, exit at Kidbrooke interchange. Free parking on site.

The 178 bus from Woolwich town centre stops right outside the gym on Broad Walk. Allow 25 minutes. For evening sessions starting at 6pm or 7pm, leaving Woolwich at 5:30pm is comfortable.

Woolwich Arsenal station is also on the Southeastern line. Kidbrooke is two stops away. From the station, the gym is an 8-minute walk.

Starting Is the Hard Part

The first step is always the most difficult. Once you are in the gym and moving, the nerves disappear quickly. Boxing has that effect - it requires enough focus that you stop thinking about how you look or whether you are doing it right.

Members from Charlton and Plumstead both have a similar story: they thought about it for months, then booked a trial, then wondered why they waited.

Do not overthink it. The first session is free. You come in, see how it works, decide if it is for you.

Book Your First Session

Beginners are welcome at any experience level. You do not need to be fit. You do not need any equipment for the first session.

Claim a free trial and come to the gym at 122 Broad Walk. The hardest part is deciding to show up.
