Hither Green has parks, good transport, and a community that values practical, local activity. What it does not have is a women's boxing session on Saturday mornings.

That session is in Kidbrooke. Honour and Glory runs women's boxing every Saturday, 10:30am to 12pm. The cost is ยฃ10. No contract, no joining fee. From Hither Green, the 178 bus through Lee covers the distance in around 20 minutes, or the drive takes 18.

What Happens in the Saturday Session

The session is structured boxing training. Not a cardio class, not a circuits session with gloves. Actual boxing, taught by coaches who correct your technique and build your skill over time.

A typical Saturday runs: warm-up and movement work, footwork and combination drills, pad rounds with coaches, bag rounds, and a brief cool-down. The pad rounds are the core of the session. You work one-to-one with a coach, who sets the combinations, monitors your form, and gives specific feedback on what needs to improve.

The first time you do pad work properly, it is harder than expected. The coordination of movement, punching, and timing all happening simultaneously is demanding. It gets cleaner over several weeks. By month two, the session feels entirely different from the first one.

Who the Saturday Group Is

Women from Hither Green, Lee, Catford, Lewisham, and across SE13. Ages from early 20s to late 50s. Some have been training for three years. Some are trying boxing for the first time.

Women's boxing sparring session

The coaches structure the session so all levels get useful work. Beginners are not left standing while experienced members do more advanced drills. The pad work is calibrated to the individual.

What Changes Over Time

The fitness changes are significant and visible within six to eight weeks of consistent attendance. Cardiovascular capacity, upper body and core strength, and agility all develop through the training.

The technical changes are what keeps people attending beyond the initial fitness motivation. Learning a skill that requires genuine attention and builds incrementally over months is a different kind of motivation from counting calories. Women who have trained here for a year describe the technical development as one of the things they value most.

Getting There From Hither Green

Bus: Pick up the 178 at Lee Green toward Woolwich. Kidbrooke is approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Car: 18 minutes via Burnt Ash Road and Lee Road. Free parking at 122 Broad Walk, SE3 8ND. Saturday morning parking is uncomplicated.

Workout clothes and trainers are all you need. Gloves are provided for your first session. No experience is assumed and no prior fitness level is required.

Honour and Glory Boxing Club

Honour and Glory is a boxing club in Kidbrooke, SE3 โ€” 18 minutes from Hither Green by car, or 46 minutes by public transport (Bus 178 via Lee Green). The club runs classes seven days a week for adults and children from age five, with no joining fee and no contract.

Head coach Anton Pattenden holds a British Boxing Board of Control trainer's licence โ€” the same licence that governs professional boxing in the UK. Classes run from recreational fitness sessions through to amateur competition preparation. The first session is always free.
