The difference between a group boxing class and a one to one session is the difference between a lecture and a tutorial. Both teach the same subject. Only one is built entirely around you.

What a Session Looks Like

A typical 60-minute one to one session at H&G covers three or four distinct phases. It starts with a specific warm-up calibrated to the work that follows. Then technical pad work - this is the core, where the coach holds pads and you develop the specific skills being worked on that session. After pads, usually bag rounds to reinforce technique under self-directed conditions. Conditioning at the end, intensity matched to your current fitness level.

Every session is different because every session is responding to what happened in the last one. This is the fundamental advantage of 1 on 1 training: the coach remembers what you are working on, what your tendencies are, where you need pushing and where you need patience.

People who train 1 on 1 typically reach the technical level of a 6-month group class member within 8-10 private sessions. The concentrated attention compounds faster than most expect.

Who One to One Training Works For

Complete beginners

Learning from scratch in private is faster and less intimidating than group classes. You get the fundamentals right from the start with no bad habits forming.

People with specific goals

Weight loss, competition prep, self-defence, fitness - private sessions can be engineered around one goal rather than serving a general class.

Returning boxers

If you boxed before and want to get back to a reasonable standard quickly, 1 on 1 is the most efficient route.

Busy schedules

Private sessions book around your availability. No need to structure your week around fixed class times.

Parents with children

Junior private sessions are available for children who want faster progression or who learn better in a focused environment.

Competition preparation

If you have a bout coming up, private sessions allow fight-specific preparation that group classes cannot provide.

Our Coaches

All personal training at H&G is delivered by BBBofC licensed coaches. Our head coach Anton Pattenden has 15 years of coaching experience across all levels, from first-time boxers to competitive amateurs. The club is ABA affiliated.

We train at our dedicated gym at 122 Broad Walk, Kidbrooke, SE3 - a proper boxing facility with a ring, heavy bags, speedballs, and the equipment a technical boxing session requires. Not a commercial gym with a boxing corner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1 on 1 better than group classes?

For technical development: yes, in most cases. For overall training volume, social energy and cost: group classes have the advantage. Most serious boxers do both. Private sessions to develop specific skills and correct weaknesses, group classes to maintain conditioning and training volume.

How often should I train one to one?

Once a week gives consistent progression. Twice a week accelerates it significantly. Most of our PT members train once a week privately and attend group classes additionally.

Where are you based?

122 Broad Walk, Kidbrooke, London SE3 8ND. Free parking on site. Accessible from Greenwich, Blackheath, Bromley and most of SE London.
