Parents often search for boxing classes for 4 or 5 year olds. The honest answer is that most children are not ready at 4 - the coordination, focus and body awareness that even a basic boxing session requires typically develop around age 5. That is why our youngest group starts at 5, not earlier.

What a Session Looks Like for a 5 Year Old

Our Infants Boxing sessions are not a miniature version of an adult class. They are designed from the ground up for young children, using games and challenges that build coordination without requiring sustained concentration.

A typical session includes warm-up games that involve movement and balance, basic footwork drills disguised as activities, punching technique on pads held by coaches (not on other children), and fitness challenges that feel like play rather than exercise. Sessions run for 45-60 minutes depending on the age group.

The children who thrive fastest are usually the ones who enjoy physical activity but have not found the right sport yet. Children who struggled with team sports - where you have to share attention with 15 other players - often do well in boxing because the coaching is more individual.

Why Start at 5?

At 5, most children can follow multi-step instructions, maintain attention for short periods, coordinate their arms and legs simultaneously, and understand the concept of taking turns. These are the baseline requirements for a productive boxing session.

Children who start at 5 develop coordination, balance and spatial awareness that transfers to every other sport and physical activity they try later. Several of our members who started at 5 or 6 are now confident young boxers at 10 or 11 - the early start gives them a genuine foundation.

If your child is 4 and keen, we would suggest waiting until their 5th birthday and then coming for a free trial. If you think they might be ready early, message us on WhatsApp and we can discuss it.

Safety for Young Children

Infants boxing is non-contact. Children do not punch each other at any point during the session. All technical work is done on pads held by DBS-checked, BBBofC licensed coaches.

The medical literature on youth boxing participation notes that training without sparring carries essentially no head injury risk. The physical demands are comparable to any school PE class.

Parents are welcome to stay and watch every session. Most do, especially for the first few weeks.

Common Questions

Can a 4 year old do boxing?

We start from age 5. At 4, most children lack the coordination and focus for a structured boxing session. We recommend waiting until their 5th birthday. If your child is close to 5 and seems ready, get in touch and we can advise.

What does my child need to bring?

Just sportswear and trainers. We provide all equipment including gloves and wraps for the trial session. Read our guide to boxing kit for kids for what to buy later.

Will my child be with older children?

The Infants group covers ages 5-9. Children aged 10 and above train in a separate Recreational Juniors group. Within the Infants session, coaches adapt activities for the different ages and abilities present.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Every child gets a free first session. No commitment, no payment details required. Just come along and see whether your child enjoys it.
