When parents search for youth boxing classes near them, they usually have two questions. Is it safe? And will my child actually improve? The answers at H&G are yes and yes, but they deserve a proper explanation.

What Youth Boxing Actually Looks Like

Children do not punch each other. That is the first thing to understand about youth boxing classes. In our Infants and junior sessions, all technique is practised on pads held by coaches and on bags. There is no contact between participants.

A typical session runs roughly like this: 10 minutes of warm-up games designed to build coordination and footwork, 20 minutes of basic punching technique on pads with coaches, 15 minutes of bag work practising combinations, and 10-15 minutes of conditioning circuits. Children leave exhausted and grinning.

Sparring - where participants box each other with protective equipment - is optional, available only to older juniors who choose to pursue competition, and always under close supervision. It is never required, never forced, and typically not introduced until a child has been training for at least a year.

The Two Groups We Run

5-9

INFANTS BOXING

This group is genuinely for young children, not a scaled-down adult programme. Sessions use games, challenges and activities that build coordination, listening skills and basic technique without the children realising they are working hard. Children come off the pads with better balance and sharper reflexes than when they started. Parents watching often cannot believe how quickly the improvement is visible.

RECREATIONAL JUNIORS

Older children get more structured coaching. Sessions cover technique in detail: stance, guard, jab, cross, hook, uppercut, defensive movement, combination work. The standard is higher and the expectation of focus is greater. Some juniors in this group pursue amateur competition through ABA tournaments. Most do not - they train purely for fitness, enjoyment and skill development. Both are fine.

What Children Actually Get From It

Over 8% of 16 to 34-year-olds in the UK box at least monthly, according to research published in 2024. The participation rate is highest among young people - and the reasons are not mysterious.

Boxing develops coordination in a way that most sports do not. The combination of footwork, head movement, timing, and punch technique makes constant demands on spatial awareness and proprioception. Children who struggle with team sports - where a lot happens fast and you have limited control - often thrive in boxing because the one-to-one coaching format gives them complete focus on their own development.

The discipline argument is real but worth being specific about. The gym operates on rules that are not negotiable: you respect the coach, you respect your training partners, you do not mess around with equipment. Children who find this framework difficult at first often find it compelling within a few sessions. The consistency of the rules - the same every week, no exceptions - seems to be part of what makes it work.

Confidence development through visible competence is the thing parents notice most. A child who could not throw a proper jab in January is boxing combinations by April. That progress is concrete and unambiguous. It transfers: we hear regularly from parents that their children are more confident at school, more willing to try new things, more resilient when things do not go their way.

Free parking is available at the venue, which matters if you are coming from further out. The gym is inside the Samuel Montagu Youth Centre, a dedicated facility - not a commercial gym with a boxing corner bolted on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can children start?

From age 5. Our Infants group (5-9) uses age-appropriate activities - games, challenges, and technique on pads. There is no expectation of the level of focus or endurance you would see in an adult class. For children aged 10 and over, the Recreational Juniors group works on proper boxing skills at a more demanding level.

Is boxing safe for young children?

Youth boxing classes are non-contact. Children do not punch each other. All technical practice is on pads and bags. The medical literature on youth boxing notes that training without sparring carries essentially no head injury risk. Our coaches are DBS checked and BBBofC licensed. Parents are welcome to watch every session.

Does my child need any experience?

No. Most children who join have never boxed before. The first session is always a free trial. We assess what a child can do and go from there. Children who have done other martial arts often progress quickly, but it is not a requirement.

What do children need to bring?

For the free trial, just sportswear and trainers. We provide all equipment including gloves and hand wraps. Children who continue training may want to get their own gloves and wraps eventually, but this is not needed to start.

Is there a competition pathway?

Yes, for those who want it. We are ABA affiliated, which means junior members who choose to compete can do so through recognised amateur tournaments. Most of our junior members do not compete - they train for fitness and enjoyment. Competition is always optional and never pushed.

What does it cost?

First session is free. After that, sessions are pay-as-you-go. No joining fee. No contract. You can attend when it suits your family's schedule without a minimum commitment. See current prices here.
