Most people who join H&G have never boxed before. That is the norm, not the exception. Our classes are structured around gradual skill development, not assumed competence. Whether you are 5 or 55, the process is the same: start with the basics, build from there, progress at a pace that suits you.
What to Expect in Your First Session
Your first session is a free trial. You do not need to commit to anything, bring any equipment, or prepare in any special way. Wear sports clothes and trainers. We provide gloves, hand wraps and any other equipment you need.
In that first session we will assess your fitness level, coordination and any previous martial arts or sports background. Then we find the right group for you. Most adult beginners go into the Recreational Adults class. Children aged 5-9 join the Infants group. Older juniors (10-16) go into Recreational Juniors.
The session itself will cover some basic stance and footwork, your first few punching techniques on pads with a coach, and probably some bag work. You will work hard. You will not embarrass yourself. You will leave knowing what you came to learn.
The Beginner Learning Curve
Boxing has a reputation for being intimidating. The reality in a well-run beginner class is the opposite. Because every skill is visible and teachable - the stance, the guard, the jab - beginners improve in ways they can see and feel from the very first session.
By session 3 or 4, most people have a working jab and are starting to string basic combinations together. By session 10-15, movement starts to become natural. The progression is consistent enough that we often see people arrive cautious and self-conscious and leave confident and competitive - not in a fighting sense, but in the sense of knowing their own capabilities.
One observation from our coaches: people who come from zero often progress faster than people who have done other martial arts. They do not have bad habits to unlearn.

Do I need to be fit before I start?
No. Boxing training will improve your fitness. You do not need to prepare first. Some people who start with us can barely complete a round on the bag. That is fine - the conditioning comes with the training.
Will I have to spar straight away?
No. Sparring is optional and typically not introduced until you have been training consistently for at least 6-12 months. Even then, it is entirely your choice. Most of our members never spar and get everything they want from the training without it.
What do I actually need to bring?
Just yourself and sportswear. We provide all equipment for your trial session. If you continue, you will want your own gloves and hand wraps eventually - but there is no rush and no pressure.
Is there a minimum commitment?
None. We do not do contracts. Sessions are pay-as-you-go. You can come once a week, twice a week, or when your schedule allows. There is no minimum number of sessions and no penalty for missing weeks. That is one reason why we never do contracts.
