About Repton Boxing Club
Repton is boxing royalty. Founded in 1884, it's one of Britain's oldest boxing clubs, housed in a corner of a former Victorian Bath House on Cheshire Street in Bethnal Green. Originally set up by Repton School to help underprivileged young men in East London, the club has produced a remarkable list of champions.
Notable alumni include John H. Stracey (world welterweight champion), Audley Harrison (Olympic gold medallist), and Maurice Hope (world champion). Even the Kray twins trained at the Repton club in the 1950s. It's a gym that serious boxing fans make pilgrimages to visit.
Repton is firmly focused on competitive amateur boxing. This is a club for people who want to box properly and potentially compete - it's not a fitness class with gloves on.
About Honour & Glory
We share Repton's commitment to proper boxing. Honour & Glory is an England Boxing affiliated amateur boxing club in Kidbrooke, SE3. Our coaches hold BBBofC licences, and we train boxers who go on to compete in official bouts.
But we also recognise that not everyone walks through the door wanting to fight. That's why we run recreational classes alongside our competitive programme, plus dedicated sessions for women, juniors, and children as young as five.
Classes
Repton focuses almost exclusively on competitive boxing for juniors and seniors. Their membership (last published at £80/year junior, £120/year senior) reflects this traditional club model. If you want to compete in amateur boxing and live in East London, Repton is among the best.
Honour & Glory runs a broader programme: infant boxing (5-9), junior sessions (10-16), senior amateurs, recreational adults, women's classes, open sessions, and personal training. Whether you want to compete or just train properly, there's a session for you.
Pricing
Repton uses an annual membership model. Published rates (which may have changed) were £80/year for juniors and £120/year for seniors, which works out very affordably if you train regularly.
Honour & Glory operates on pay-as-you-go pricing from £5 per session. No annual commitment, no joining fees. Better if you're not sure how often you'll train, or if you want to try before committing. For regular attendees, both clubs work out affordable.
Facilities
Repton's Victorian Bath House is genuinely special - the kind of place that makes you feel like you're part of boxing history. It's old-school, no-frills, and exactly what a proper boxing gym should look like.
Our space at the Samuel Montagu Youth Centre is modern and functional. Full-size ring, bags, all the equipment. Less character than a Victorian bath house, but well-lit, clean, and comfortable for families bringing young children.
Location
This is where the comparison breaks down for most South East Londoners. Repton is in Bethnal Green, E2 - a good 45-minute drive from SE3, or well over an hour by public transport. For regular training, especially with children, that commute is tough.
Honour & Glory is in the heart of Kidbrooke, easily reached from Greenwich, Eltham, Blackheath, and Lee.
The Verdict
Repton deserves every bit of its legendary reputation. If you live in East London, it should be top of your list. But for families and boxers in SE3 and the surrounding areas, the distance simply doesn't work for regular training.
Honour & Glory gives you proper boxing coaching, England Boxing affiliation, and a competitive pathway - all within minutes of home. We also cater to younger children (from age 5) and offer recreational and women's sessions that Repton doesn't.
Come and try a free session - we think you'll be impressed.
