About Fitzroy Lodge ABC
Fitzroy Lodge is one of the most storied amateur boxing clubs in London. Tucked under a railway arch near Lambeth Bridge since 1946, it's produced 26 junior ABA champions and 13 senior champions, including three-time ABA champion Neville Cole. The club is a registered charity, run by volunteers, and has a reputation that extends well beyond South London.
The venue itself is atmospheric - a converted railway arch with two boxing rings, bags, weights, and a cardio section. It's been featured in newspapers, magazines, and documentaries. Walking through the heavy wooden door feels like stepping into boxing history.
Fitzroy Lodge runs competitive training for juniors (10-18) and seniors (19+) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus Saturday mornings. They also offer recreational "keep fit" boxing classes throughout the week.
About Honour & Glory
Honour & Glory is based at the Samuel Montagu Youth Centre in Kidbrooke, SE3. We're an England Boxing affiliated amateur boxing club with qualified coaches holding BBBofC licences. Our head coach Anton brings over 30 years of boxing experience.
We run classes for all ages from 5 upwards - infants (5-9), juniors (10-16), senior amateurs, recreational adults, and dedicated women's sessions. Sessions run on a pay-as-you-go basis from £5, with no joining fees or contracts.
Classes
Fitzroy Lodge focuses on two tracks: competitive boxing (juniors and seniors) and recreational "keep fit" sessions. Their junior competitive training starts at age 10. They don't advertise dedicated women's sessions or infant classes.
At Honour & Glory, we start children as young as five in our infants programme. We also run separate women's classes, open sessions, and personal training from £30/hour. If you're looking for variety in class types and age groups, we cover more ground.
Pricing
Fitzroy Lodge recently moved to a booking app (Glofox) for managing sessions and subscriptions. Exact pricing requires registering on their app. As a charity, they're generally affordable, but the subscription model means you're committing to regular payments.
Honour & Glory keeps it simple: pay as you go, from £5 for junior and amateur sessions to £10 for adult recreational classes. No app downloads needed. No subscriptions. Turn up, train, pay.
Facilities
Fitzroy Lodge has the more atmospheric venue - there's no getting around that. A Victorian railway arch with decades of boxing history soaked into the walls. Two rings, bags, weights, and everything you need.
Our home at the Samuel Montagu Youth Centre is modern and well-maintained, with a full-size boxing ring, bags, and all the equipment. It's perhaps less Instagram-worthy than a railway arch, but it's warm, clean, and purpose-built for training.
Location and Access
This is the biggest practical difference. Fitzroy Lodge is in Lambeth, near Elephant & Castle - roughly a 35-minute drive from SE3, or over an hour by public transport. That's a serious commitment for regular training, especially with kids.
Honour & Glory is right in Kidbrooke, accessible from Blackheath, Eltham, Lee, and Greenwich in minutes.
The Verdict
Fitzroy Lodge is a genuinely special club. If you live in Lambeth or nearby, it's an outstanding choice with serious boxing pedigree. But for anyone in South East London - Kidbrooke, Greenwich, Eltham, Blackheath - the commute makes regular training difficult, especially for families.
Honour & Glory offers a wider programme (ages 5+, women's classes, recreational and competitive), simpler pricing (pay-as-you-go from £5), and a location that's right on your doorstep. We may not have 80 years of history yet, but we're building something genuinely good for this community.
