About Fisher Boxing Club

Fisher Boxing Club (also known as Fisher Amateur Boxing Club) is a Bermondsey institution dating back to the early 1900s. Based under railway arches on Fair Street, SE16, the club has produced world, British, and local champions across more than a century of boxing.

The club is part of the wider Downside Fisher Youth Club, which also includes a swimming pool, dance studio, and catering kitchen. It's a traditional spit-and-sawdust gym - the kind of place where boxing history feels embedded in the walls.

Current head coach Peter McDonagh runs the boxing programme, which caters to various levels. Open training costs around £5, with coached sessions around £15.

About Honour & Glory

Honour & Glory is an England Boxing affiliated amateur boxing club at the Samuel Montagu Youth Centre in Kidbrooke, SE3. We teach proper boxing to everyone from children aged 5 through to competitive amateurs and recreational adults.

All our coaches are qualified, with head coach Anton bringing over 30 years of experience. Sessions are pay-as-you-go from £5, with no joining fees or contracts.

Classes

Fisher offers boxing training in a more traditional, open-gym format. You can train on your own for £5 or join a coached session for £15. The club doesn't appear to run as structured a timetable as some modern clubs, operating more on the traditional "turn up and train" model.

Honour & Glory runs a structured weekly timetable with dedicated sessions: infants (5-9), juniors (10-16), amateur boxing, recreational adults, women's boxing, and open sessions. This structure makes it easier for beginners and families to know exactly what to expect when they arrive.

Pricing

Fisher charges around £5 for open training and £15 for coached sessions. Personal training is also available at extra cost.

Honour & Glory's coached sessions start from £5 for juniors and amateurs, up to £10 for recreational adults. Every session is coached - you won't be left to figure things out on your own. Personal training starts from £30/hour.

Facilities

Fisher's railway arch gym has genuine character - it's a proper old-school boxing gym. Being part of Downside Fisher Youth Club means there are additional facilities available beyond just boxing.

Honour & Glory's home at the Samuel Montagu Youth Centre is a modern, well-maintained community venue. It's perhaps less atmospheric than a railway arch, but it's warm, well-lit, and particularly comfortable for families with young children.

Location

Fisher in Bermondsey is about 25 minutes by car from SE3, or 35-40 minutes by public transport. It's a fair trek for regular training.

Honour & Glory in Kidbrooke is central to Greenwich, Eltham, Blackheath, and Lee.

The Verdict

Fisher Boxing Club is a Bermondsey legend with more than a century of history. If you live in Bermondsey or Southwark, it's a genuine boxing institution worth visiting.

For South East London residents in the Greenwich area, Honour & Glory offers a more accessible location, a structured class programme (including dedicated children's and women's sessions), and straightforward pay-as-you-go pricing where every session is fully coached.
